Episodes: What Happened This Time

Each recap opens only when you choose. Inside, you will find three labelled parts: the recap, the arc it serves, and our read.

How each recap is laid out

Recap is a plain account of events on screen, in order, without adjectives that pass judgment. Arc connects the episode to a character's longer journey and to the season's structure, noting where it falls: setup, midpoint, turn or landing. Our read is opinion and interpretation, and we label it as such so you can take it or leave it.

Every recap panel carries a tag naming the series and season it spoils. If you are partway through a season, check the tag before opening. Row titles and episode codes are always safe to read.

Selected recaps

  • Breaking Bad · S5 E14 · "Ozymandias"

Directed by Rian Johnson · Aired 2013
Spoiler · Season 5 Open the recap

Recap. The shootout in the desert ends with Hank killed by Jack's crew, who also take most of Walt's buried money. Walt tells Jesse a truth about Jane's death and leaves him to be held captive. At home, the confrontation with Skyler and Walt Jr. turns violent, and Walt leaves with baby Holly, later returning her. He makes a phone call to Skyler that appears designed to shift blame onto himself, then leaves Albuquerque with the help of a man who arranges new identities.

Arc. This is the season's collapse point. Everything Walt built across five seasons, from money to family to partnership, is lost within one episode.

Our read. We see the phone call as Walt's last protective act wrapped in cruelty, though some viewers read it as genuine rage. The episode supports both.

  • The Sopranos · S3 E11 · "Pine Barrens"

Directed by Steve Buscemi · Aired 2001
Spoiler · Season 3 Open the recap

Recap. Paulie and Christopher go to collect money from a Russian man named Valery. A fight breaks out, they believe he is dead and drive him to the snowy Pine Barrens, where he escapes into the woods. Lost and freezing, the pair turn on each other until Tony and Bobby come to retrieve them. Valery's fate is never shown.

Arc. A largely standalone story that sharpens the Paulie and Christopher dynamic and shows Tony's patience with his crew wearing thin.

Our read. The unresolved ending is a deliberate choice, not a loose thread; the episode is about the men, not the man they lost.

  • Succession · S4 E3 · "Connor's Wedding"

    Aired 2023
Spoiler · Season 4 Open the recap

Recap. On the day of Connor's wedding on a boat, Kendall, Shiv and Roman learn by phone that Logan has collapsed on a flight. They say goodbye over the phone while staff try to revive him. Logan's death is confirmed, and the siblings face the business consequences in real time.

Arc. The question the series has asked since its pilot, "who succeeds Logan?", stops being hypothetical in the third episode of the final season.

Our read. Placing the death this early lets the season examine grief and ambition at the same time, which we think is its strongest structural decision.

  • Severance · S1 E9 · "The We We Are"

    Season 1 finale · Aired 2022
Spoiler · Season 1 Open the recap

Recap. Using the Overtime Contingency, Dylan holds switches at the office so Mark, Helly and Irving wake as their work selves in the outside world. Helly discovers she is Helena Eagan of the founding family. Irving finds Burt's home. Mark realises that Ms. Casey is his wife, Gemma, whom he believed had died. The episode ends before any of them can act on what they know.

Arc. Each innie gains a piece of their outie's life, turning the season's office mystery into a question about identity.

Our read. A cliffhanger, but an earned one; every reveal was set up across the season.

Catching up after a long break

If a new season arrives after years away, re-read the season review before opening individual recaps; it restores the shape of the story faster than episode-by-episode detail. Then open the final two recaps of the previous season to refresh the exact situation each character is in.
